capillaries only have the "inner tunica" one cell thick .... *many things can pass thru capillary walls by diffusion.... diffusion -no active transport so does not require energy from the body
veins -muscle (middle layer) smaller and thinner, easily broken, most equipped with one-way valve so blood flows back to the heart only, veins have larger diameter 9:47pmMe
gravity has to be overcome to get blood back from the legs,
vericose veins -valves start to fail, knotty
spider veins-dilated blood vessels near skin
walking contracts muscles and keeps blood flowing also helps lymphatic system and veinous blood flow
aortic aneurism pg 368 mostly men effected over 60yrs, est 5% men over 60 have it,walls of aorta lose elasticity and can bulge widely with blood, as it grows, walls stretch more and weaken, increasing the risk of rupture if rupture occurs, can bleed to death in very short time
artherosclerosis pg 370 cholesterol/plaque build up, usually 45yrs+, often have kidney problems -massage ok, but pay attention to any meds and side effects they may have
hyptertension pg 378 high blood pressure, affect 1 in 3 adults, if taking meds be careful
renaud syndrome pg 382 vein constriction in extremities *fingers/toes/nose* effect mostly women 15-40yrs, primary massage beneficial secondary ??
varicose veins pg 385 more women effected, approx 1/2 people over 50 effected, often caused by long period of standing -massage locally contraindicated
