Differences between Spanish, French, and English settlements

QuestionAnswer
In which region of the New World did the Spanish settle? The Spanish had settlements in the Southwestern United States, Florida, Central America and Southern America
Where in the New World did the French explore and establish trade routes and trading posts? The French settled along the St. Lawrence River in Canada, in the Great Lakes region, and in the Ohio Valley.
In which part of the New World did the English explore and establish colonies? The English settled on the Eastern Seaboard.
What was the relationship between the Native Americans and the Spanish? The Spanish took land from the Native Americans, enslaved them, and forced them to make dramatic changes in their culture.
How were Native Americans forced to change their culture when the Spanish arrived in the New World? The Spanish forced the Native Americans to give up their languages for Spanish, join the Catholic Church, and give up their land.
Explain the relationship between the French and the Native Americans they encountered. The French treated the Natives as equal business partners in most cases. The French were willing to share the land, learn Native languages, and intermarried with the Native Americans.
Explain the relationship between the English and the Native Americans they encountered. The English relied on Native American knowledge of farming and wild game to help them survive early settlements but then took land from them. The English did not treat the Natives as equals and often went to war with them over land.
Explain the impact of European colonization on Native Americans. Many Native American cultures were destroyed by the Europeans. Their languages and religions were lost, land was taken from tthem, and European diseases killed nearly 20 million Native Americans.
