Massage
Question | Answer |

Identify aspects of a pre-event sports massage | Warm-up massage is a stimulating, superficial, fast-paced, rhythmic massage, that lasts 10-15 mins. Emphasis is on the muscles used in the sporting event & the goal is for athlete to feel that his/her body & mind is truly "ready" for the event. |
Identify aspects of a post-event sports massage | Warm-down massage can reduce muscle tension, minimize swelling and soreness, encourage relaxation, and reduce recuperation time. The massage techniques used can spread muscle fibers to minimize facial adhesions and encourage circulation. |
Identify benefits of massage in general | Increases circulation, stimulates lymphatic circulation, stretches fascia, increases ROM, alleviates pain, helps reduce insomnia, can help release repressed emotional energy, and increases overall sense of well being. *(not an exhaustive list) |
Identify benefits of reassessment | MT and client can see results right away, (increase ROM), it helps provide a strategy for next time, and is an excellent rebooking tool. |
Identify benefits of Cross Fiber | It realigns fibers, breaks up scar tissue and adhesions, speeds healing, increases circulation, and decreases pain. |
Identify benefits of Longitudinal Release | It lengthens the muscle fibers, helps restore muscular elasticity, releases superficial fascia from underlying tissue. |
Identify benefits of Effleurage | It returns venous blood flow and lymphatics, gives continuity/flow to massage, and enables the client and massage therapist to become accustomed to each other. |
Identify benefits of Petrissage | It warms tissue for deeper work, increases circulation, increases the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the muscle, softens superficial fascia, decreases muscle tension, and restores mobility by decreasing adhesions. |
Identify benefits of Friction | It can be used as an assessment tool, prevents & breaks up local adhesions/scar tissue, stimulates local circulation, increases nutrients & oxygen delivery to tissue, carries away metabolic waste, hydrates all tissues including connective tissue (fascia). |
Identify benefits of Vibration | It stimulates nerve activity, adds variety to work, sedates when done with fine movement, stimulates when done vigorously, can even stimulate internal organs when done over area. |
Identify benefits of Tapotement | It stimulates the nervous system, tones muscle, softens tissue, and increases circulation to area. |
Identify cautions of doing deep tissue work | Cautious during DT work: pregnancy, varicose veins, lack of sensation due to nerve injury, frail or elderly people/brittle bones, when a client has a cold or flu, or skin conditions. Also be aware of MT body mechanics, and table height. |
Identify elements of S.O.A.P. charting | S=Subjective=What the CL tells the MT about themselves. O=Objective=The MT's observations & the work done. A=ReAssessment=Changes in the CL's condition as a result of massage, & any tests the MT performs on the CL. P=Plan=Suggested future work. |
Identify principles of doing deep tissue work | 1.Use bone as guide 2.Use good leverage 3.Use strait arms/wrists 4.Work w/ CL breath 5.Work slowly 6.Use your intuition & be sensitive to CL needs 7.Communicate w/ CL about pressure/pain 8.Merge w/ the tissue 9.Be aware CL may experience emotional release |
Identify signs of emotional release in a client | Breath changes, holding muscles, crying, talking, trembling, twitching, yawning, laughing, drooling, shaking, swelling, teeth grinding, coughing, humming, nausea, eyes twitching, groans, screams, tantrums, changes in body temp, sexual arousal, sweating |
Identify sports massage injury grading | Grade1:10% or > of muscle fibers tear, hold against med. resist, mild tenderness/swelling, 6weeks to heal. Grade2:50% tear, no hold against med resist, limping/swelling/painful, 6weeks-1yr. Grade3:100% tear, extreme pain/swelling, repair thru surgery. |
Identify universal precautions | 1.Hand Washing;before/after contact w/ CL, restrooms, etc. 2.Use of Gloves;vinyl/latex if MT has skin cond., during invasive procedures, clean up 3.Housekeeping Procedures; keep work area clean 4.Personal activities; don't do eating/drinking/smoking, etc. |
When to refer a client to a doctor | When the client is in an acute stage of: injury, illness, or disease of any kind...? |
When to use hydrotherapy--cold techniques | In the acute stage use directly on the injury immediately, use the R.I.C.E. method of administration. In the sub-acute stage (after at least 48 hours), use directly on the injury, use the M.I.C.E.E. method of administration. |
When not to use hydrotherapy--cold techniques | Don't use if: CL has circulation problems, arthritis is in acute stage and is inflamed, around the kidneys, CL has a decreased sensitivity to cold, CL has an ice allergy, or if CL is a small child or infant. |
What is Compression (as a sports massage technique) | Warms & spreads muscle tissue, simulates pumping action of heart;done on belly of muscle, press tissue down 2 bone;needs rhythmic pumping action, needs 2 b sustained;whole body lunging, 100compress or 1.5-2 mins. per muscle group;creates durable hyperemia |
What is Effleurage | It is from the French effleurer=to skim over; applied horizontally with the grain of fibers to tissue; hands mold to body part; is a long gliding stroke; pressure-somewhat superficial; can be slow-soothing, or can be faster-stimulating |
What is Friction | It is small circular movements, superficial to moderately deep; use of fingers, thumbs, palms, or soft fist; direction of stroke usually crosses the fiber direction; sink in and move deeper tissue. |
What is Hyperthermia | When the body's rate of heat production is greater than it's ability to dissipate heat. Examples: heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. |
What is Petrissage | It is from the French petrir=to knead; kneading movement done with whole palm or finger tips; wringing, kneading or skin rolling and especially compress & lift; applied vertically to muscle across the fibers. |
What is Reciprocal Inhibition | This method is used in cramping and post-cramping to re-educate the cramping muscle; the MT instructs the CL to contract the opposite muscle, the body's natural response is to let go of the cramping muscle, MT uses PNF stretch on muscle that was cramping. |
What is R.I.C.E. | Rest: don't use injured area at all for 48 hours to avoid risk of further injury. Ice: use directly on injury immediately. Compression: use of bandages on injury(MT, no; CL, yes). Elevate: preferably above the heart level. |
What is Tapotement | It is from the French tapoter=to rap, drum, or pat; tapping; done lightly w/ fingertips; hacking: using ulnar side of hand, fingers extended; soft fist beating: w/ ulnar area; cupping: cup hands; pincement: lightly plucking w/ fingertips. |
