Civil War Vocab

VocabDefinition
Sectionalism Rivalry based on the special interests of different areas
Fugitive A person who is running away from legal authority
Secede To withdraw or break away from an organization or country
Abstain To decline to vote either for or against a proposal or motion
Popular Sovereignty The belief that government is subject to the will of the people
Border ruffians An armed supporter of slavery that crossed the border from Mississippi to vote in Kansas during the mid 1850's
Arsenal A place to store weapons or military equipment
Secession withdraw or leave the Union
States rights The idea that states should have all powers that the Constitution does not give to the federal government or forbid to the states
Border state State between north and south that was divided over whether to remain in the Union or join Confederacy
Blockade To close off a country's ports
Offensive Causing someone to feel deeply hurt, upset, or angry
Rebel To have open defiance of authority
Yankee An inhabitant of New England or one of the northern states
Blockade runner A ship that manages to enter or leave a blockaded port.
Ironclad A warship equipped with iron plating for protection
Casualty A soldier who is killed, wounded, captured, or missing in battle
Emancipate The process of freeing enslaved people
Ratify To vote approval of something
Habeas corpus A court order that requires police to bring a prisoner to court to explain why they are holding the person
Bounty Reward or payment
Greenback A dollar bill
Inflation Increase in price for goods or services
Entrenched To place within a trench, or ditch, for defense.
Total war A strategy of bringing war to the entire society, not just the military
