Chapter 19

The U.S. Civil War Vocabulary

TermDefinition
offensive Of or relating to an attack or aggression.
preserve To protect or maintain something.
morale The overall positive or negative feeling of a person or group.
border state One of the slave states that chose to remain with the Union during the U.S. Civil War.
siege A military operation where one side surrounds its enemy, cutting off essential supplies, with the goal of forcing those surrounded to surrender.
cavalry Soldiers who fight on horseback.
reinforcement Something that provides additional support or strength.
confederacy A group in which members remain independent but are loosely joined for a certain purpose.
defensive Working to protect someone or something.
emancipate To set free from slavery or from other bondage.
terms The details of an agreement.
proclamation A public or official announcement dealing with a matter of great importance.
labor-intensive Requiring a large workforce or a large amount of work to complete the product.
surrender To agree to stop fighting or resisting, usually because defeat is near.
strategy A plan of action designed to achieve an overall goal, such as how to win a war.
evacuate To leave or empty.
invade To enter despite opposition, especially to take control.
general a very high-ranking officer in the military.
