Dunkirk Germans traped almost 400,000 British and French soldiers as they fled to the beaches of Dunkirk on the French side of the English Channel. All different kinds of vessels, more than 800, ferried about 330,000 of the troops across the channel to safety.
France WWI - Fighting on the western front in France, within 50 miles of Paris. WWII - Fall of France 1940 to Hitler. D-Day, Normandy in Northern France Vietnam - French want to rule in Indochina.
French Indochina America's involvement in Vietnam began in 1950 during the French Indochina War - France's attempt to reestablish rule in Vietnam after WWII. (French had ruled them (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos) and Vietminh drove them out.
Great Britain Chamberlain signed Munich Agreement to give Germany the Sudetenland. After Germany attacked Poland, Britain and France declared war on Germany. Battle of Britain, Luftwaffe bombing Britain, but RAF won.
Hiroshima An important Japanese military center, on which the first atomic bomb code-named "Little Boy" was dropped by the bomber plane, the Enola Gay.
Iwo Jima Japanese-controlled island (name means sulfur island)it was critical to the U.S. as a base that the bombers could use to reach Japan. More than 20,700 Japanese defended it in tunnels and caves. More than 6000 U.S. Marines died , only 200 Japanese survived

Nagasaki The second atomic bomb code-named "Fat Man" was dropped on Nagasaki three days after the first bomb.
Okinawa In April 1945, U.S. Marines invaded Okinawa. Japanese led over 1900 Kamikaze attacks. Over 7600 U.S. died, 110,000 Japanese.

Tonkin In 1964 a North Vietnamese patrol boat fired at USS Maddox, patrolling in the Gulf of Tonkin off the North Viet. coast. Johnson and Congress passed Tonkin Gulf Resolution that granted the pres. broad military powers in Vietnam.
