Age of Exploration

Here are the words to help you understand the Age of Exploration

TermDefinition
Exploration The process of leaving one's country by ship to explore "new" lands.
Controversial When something can be good or bad, depending on the evidence used.
God, Glory, and Gold The reasons why explorers left their countries and set sail for "new" lands.
Vasco da Gama An explorer from Portugal. He was the first person to sail around the Southern tip of Africa.
Hernan Cortez An explorer from Spain. He explored Mexico and had a negative impact on the Aztec Empire there. Called a Conquistador.
Zheng He An explorer from China. He was exploring places in Asia and Africa to prove China was a great as the European nations also exploring.
Christopher Columbus An explorer from Spain. He was attempting to find a new route to India but ended up in the Caribbean. He was the first European in the Bahamas.
Columbian Exchange The transfer of plants, animals, culture, human populations, technology, disease, and ideas between the Americas, West Africa, and Europe in the 15th (1600s) and 16th (1700s) centuries.
Smallpox A disease that gravely impacted Native American populations.
Dehumanization The process of treating a person as if they are not a human being.
Atlantic Slave Trade The trade of human beings across the Atlantic Ocean, from Africa to the Americas.
Isolation When a country chooses to cut ties with others and close their nation to outsiders.
