Geologic time scale a representation of time based on the rock record of Earth
Rock Strata layers of sedimentary rock
Fossils preserved remains of plants and animals whose bodies were buried in sediments
Layers four divisions that make up Earth: the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core
Earth surface the part of the water or land that touches the air above it
Weathering the breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on the surface of the Earth
Chemical weathering occurs when rocks undergo chemical reactions to form new minerals

Continental Crust the outermost layer of Earth's lithosphere that makes up the planet's continents
Oceanic Crust the outermost layer of Earth's lithosphere that is found under the oceans
Mantle the largest layer of the earth (between the crust and the outer core)
Transform boundaries places where plates slide sideways past each other
Divergent boundaries occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other
