World War I

TermDefinition
Palace of Versailles Location of meetings to determine conditions of peace after World War I. This castle was located in the heart of France. Louis XIV built it.
Woodrow Wilson Represented the United States at the Paris Peace Conference. Proposed the Fourteen Points. Was the President of the US during World War I.
Georges Clemenceau Represented France at the Paris Peace Conference. Wanted to punish Germany for all that it had done to France. Shot down most of Wilson's Fourteen Points.
The Fourteen Points Wilson's proposal for achieving a just and lasting peace. Wanted to spread democracy, free markets, international organization, and an active global role for the United States. Wanted to come at Germany from a more restorative standpoint.
League of Nations Proposed international association whose job would be to keep peace among nations. Precursor to the United Nations. The idea was that nations could come together and peacefully negotiate global issues.
War guilt clause Part of the Treaty of Versailles that placed responsibility for the war solely on Germany. This left Germany bitter for years to come. This clause would lead Germany to start World War II.
Austria-Hungary Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia were formed from this empire. One of the aging empires. Was split up after World War I and a lot of these countries would become targets of Hitler during World War II.
Great Britain Palestine, Iraq, and Transjordan came under control of this country. One of Germany's mandates. This country was part of the Triple Entente during the war.
Finland This nation, formerly part of Russia, that became independent. Is located in Northern Europe. Is located between Sweden and Norway, and across from Denmark in Scandinavia.
Mandates Term for postwar territories expected to be governed by the League of Nations. Were really split up between the US, France, and Great Britain. Were essentially colonies.
