Respiratory System

QuestionAnswer
the respiratory system the body system that deals with breathing
oxygen -needed by every cell in your body to live and function -you breathe this in along with other gases when you inhale -the lungs are two sac-like organs that replace this with the carbon dioxide in your blood
brain controls how you breathe
diaphragm strong, curved muscle attached below the lungs to the lower ribs and backbone
chest muscles and diaphragm -muscles that change the space and pressure inside the body to allow breathing -control the movement of the lungs
carbon dioxide the gas produced by cells
exhale when you breathe out carbon dioxide and other gases
involuntary the type of breathing that you do automatically without thinking about it
voluntary the type of breathing you do when think about and control your breathing
cilia tiny hairlike structures that line your nasal passages and most of the respiratory system
pharynx another name for throat
trachea the windpipe leading to the lungs
epiglottis the flap of tissue that covers the trachea when swallowing
larynx voice box
vocal cords the thickness and length affect the pitch of a sound
upper respiratory system nose, throat, and larynx
lungs -part of the lower respiratory system -the parts of the respiratory system that are sac-like organs that replace the carbon dioxide in your blood with oxygen
bronchi the two tubes that branch off from the trachea
trachea and bronchi are lined with... mucus and cilia
respiration exchange of gases during breathing
snore sound caused by air that cannot move freely and causes parts of the mouth and throat to vibrate and hit together
sneeze irritation to the lining of the airways causes air to be violently released through the nose
hiccup -when the diaphragm muscle contracts quickly, causing short breaths of air and sudden closure of the epiglottis -can happen during an asthma attack because the bronchial tubes become tightened making it difficult to breathe.
smoking -this is harmful because the smoke keeps the cilia and alveoli from working properly -contains poisonous chemicals; can form a sticky tar that keeps the cilia from working properly.
allergies can cause a person to have difficulty breathing when around dust, pollen, or other particles in the air
pneumonia when the lungs become infected
Why should Christian take care of their bodies? - it is their responsibility and glorifies God, the one who made them.
asthma a respiratory disorder that often causes the muscles around the bronchial tubes to tighten more than normal, making it difficult for a person to breathe
respiratory diseases some examples are flu, strep throat, and bronchitis
capillaries tiny blood vessels that surround the alveoli
alveoli tiny air sacs in the lungs
inhale breathing in oxygen and other gases
path that air takes when exhaled to create speech 1. air goes upward from the lungs 2. air goes into the trachea 3. air pushes through the vocal cords 4. the vocal cords vibrate and produce sound waves
