Unit 11 Environment
Water Resources
Term | Definition |
---|---|
aquifer | an underground layer of water-bearing material, consisting of permeable or fractured rock, or of unconsolidated materials. |
nonpoint source pollution | comes from oil, pet waste, pesticide, herbicide, fertilizer, bacteria, sediment that ends up on the ground naturally or from human activity. Rainwater picks up these contaminants as it washes over yards, sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and fields |
water table | the upper limit of the portion of the ground wholly saturated with water |
point source pollution | any single identifiable source of pollution from which pollutants are discharged, such as a pipe, ditch, ship or factory smokestack. |
watershed | the area that drains into a river or lake. a dividing ridge (as a mountain range) separating one drainage area from others |
freshwater | a renewable and variable, but finite natural resource. Fresh water is replenished through the process of the natural water cycle. |
pollutant | a substance that pollutes something, especially water or the atmosphere. |
groundwater | water within the earth especially that supplies wells and springs |
impermeable | not permitting passage (as of a fluid) through its substance |
permeable | having pores or openings that permit liquids or gases to pass through |
water cycle | water evaporates, condenses, falls as precipitation, and eventually evaporates again. |
reservoirs | a place where something is kept in store: such as an artificial lake where water is collected and kept in quantity for us |
trenches | a long cut in the ground |
bioaccumulation | a process of accumulation of chemicals in an organism that takes place if the rate of intake exceeds the rate of excretion |
biomagnification | the concentration of toxins in an organism as a result of its ingesting other plants or animals in which the toxins are more widely disbursed. |
anthropogenic | environmental change caused or influenced by people, either directly or indirectly |
currents | the part of a fluid body (such as air or water) moving continuously in a certain direction, the swiftest part of a stream, a tidal or nontidal movement of lake or ocean water |
phytoplankton | microscopic marine algae. |
