dissolve | Mixes evenly into a liquid by breaking apart into pieces that are too small to see. |
electric conductivity | a property that describes how well a substance allows electricity to pass through it. |
matter | anything that takes up space + has weight. all matter is made of moving particles. |
particles | tiny pieces that make up matter. |
property | a characteristic of matter that can be observed + measured to help identify it. |
reaction | a process where one or more substances are changed into new substances |
solubility | a property that describes whether or not a substance can dissolve in another substance |
solution | a mixture in which the particles or a material are dissolved w/ the particles of another material |
state change | a change of a substance from one state of matter to another. some common state changes include: melting, freezing, evaporation, + condensation |
state of matter | the way particles in a piece of matter move |
substance | matter that is made of only one kind of atom or molecule |
thermal conductivity | a property that describes how well a substance allows heat to pass through it |
attract | to pull an object, even without touching it |
atom | a tiny piece of matter that is too small to see |
evidence | information that supports an answer to a question |
explain | to describe how something works or why something happens |
inference | something you figure out based on observations + information you already know |
mixture | matter that is made up of more than one substance |
model | something scientists make to answer questions about the real world |
molecule | a group of atoms joined together in a particular way |
observe | to use any of the five senses to gather information about something |
soluble | able to dissolve in water or other liquid |
gas | a substance that is like air + has no fixed shape |
liquid | a substance that is able to flow freely |
solid | a firm substance that the particles do not move |
