TermDefinition
physical change a change that changes the form of a substance but not the actual substance
chemical change a change that causes a new form or appearance and a new substance to arise, and usually is irreversible
characteristic property property that never changes regardless of color, size, or substance
solid A state of matter where the particles are tightly packed each other, and the particles can barely move anywhere. It has a definite shape and volume.
liquid A state of matter where the particles are a little bit more spread out than a solid. It can move a little bit more freely than a solid. Has a definite volume but doesn't have a definite shape.
gas A state of matter where the particles are going all over the place, spreading everywhere, moving very freely. Due to this, it has no definite shape or definite volume.
viscosity the resistance to a liquid flowing
matter anything that has mass and takes up space
amorphous solid the particles are arranged in an irregular pattern
crystalline solid solids that are made up of crystals
fluid a liquid substance that flows
evaporation change from a liquid to a gas at a surface
vaporization change from liquid to gas
condensation change from gas to liquid
sublimation change from a solid to a gas (skips the liquid state, because it gains enough thermal energy to turn directly into a gas)
law of conservation of energy energy cannot be created or destroyed
deposition the change from a gas to a solid (it loses enough thermal energy to skip the liquid state to turn directly into a solid)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
