Poetry Terms

TermDefinition
Context Clues hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words
Free Verse Non-metrical, non-rhyming lines that closely follow the natural rhythms of speech
Imagery Elements of a poem that invoke any of the five senses to create a set of mental images.
Line a subdivision of a poem, specifically a group of words arranged into a row that ends for a reason other than the right-hand margin
Metaphor a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable
Repetition repeating words, phrases, lines, or stanzas
Rhyme scheme the ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of the lines of a poem or verse
Stanza a division of a poem consisting of two or more lines arranged together as a unit
Subject the idea or thing that the poem concerns or represents
Theme the message an author wants to communicate through the piece
Tone a literary device that conveys the author's attitude toward the subject, speaker, or audience of a poem
