Context Clues | hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words |
Free Verse | Non-metrical, non-rhyming lines that closely follow the natural rhythms of speech |
Imagery | Elements of a poem that invoke any of the five senses to create a set of mental images. |
Line | a subdivision of a poem, specifically a group of words arranged into a row that ends for a reason other than the right-hand margin |
Metaphor | a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable |
Repetition | repeating words, phrases, lines, or stanzas |
Rhyme scheme | the ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of the lines of a poem or verse |
Stanza | a division of a poem consisting of two or more lines arranged together as a unit |
Subject | the idea or thing that the poem concerns or represents |
Theme | the message an author wants to communicate through the piece |
Tone | a literary device that conveys the author's attitude toward the subject, speaker, or audience of a poem |
