worddefinition
militarism a policy of glorifying military power and keeping a standing army always prepared for war.
Triple Alliance an association of the city- states of Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan, which led to the formation of the Aztec Empire.
Kaiser Wilhelm 2 a German emperor.
Allied Powers (Triple Entente) a military alliance between Great Britain, France, and Russia in the years preceding World War 1.
Central Powers in World War 1, the nations of Germany and Austria- Hungary, along with the other nations that fought on their side.
Western Front in World War 1, the region of the northern France where the forces of the Allies and the Central Powers battled each other.
trench warfare a form of warfare in which opposing armies fight each other from trenches dug in the battlefield.
Eastern Front in World War 1, the region along with German- Russia border where Russians and Serbs battled Germans, Austria, and Turks.
unrestricted- submarine warfare the use of submarines to sink without warning any ship found in an enemy's waters.
total war a conflict in which the participating countries devote all their resources to the war effort.
rationing the imitating of the amounts of goods people can buy - often imposed by governments during wartime, when goods are in short supply.
propaganda information or material spread to advance a course or to damage an opponent's cause
armistice an agreement to stop fighting

self- determination the freedom of a people to decide under what form of government they wish to live.
Treaty of Versailles the peace treaty signed by Germany and the Allied powers after World War 1
League of Nations an international association formed after World War 1 with the goal of keeping peace among nations
Alliances an agreement to support other nations especially during wartime
Imperialism bigger stronger nations take over weaker nations for resources
Nationalism pride in one's nation often leads to believing your nation is superior to others
What event triggered the war? Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
What was the Lusitania? The Lusitania was a luxury cruise liner that was sunk by the Germans and killed over 1,000 civilians
What were some new technolgies used during the war? Deadly gas Machine Guns tanks
What was the Zimmerman telegram? Germany wrote a telegram asking Mexico to attack the U.S. and they will get back the land they lost
How did entry into WWI change life in the US? millions of young men went off to war women worked in the factories industry focused on wartime production
Czar Nicolas II Russian leader during WW1 who was overthrown during the Russian revolution and killed
