Science U6 Energy

TermDefinition
Energy Ability to do work
Chemical Energy energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds. Energy is often released in the form of heat during a chemical. These are known as exothermic reactions
Electrical Energy Energy that results from the movement of electrically charged particles
Motion Also known as mechanical energy, it is the energy stored in moving objects. The faster the object moves the more energy is stored. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion
Heat Also known as Thermal energy. Energy that is transferred between systems or objects of different temperatures.
Nuclear Energy The use of nuclear reactions to produce electricity.
Light Energy Kinetic energy with the ability to make types of visible light.
Gravitational Energy The energy stored in an object due to its height above the Earth. A form of potential energy
Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can not be created nor destroyed
Nonrenewable Energy Natural resources that are limited in supply.
Renewable Energy Resources that can be replenished or has a limitless supply.
Oil A Liquid fossil fuel that can be transported easily.
Crude Oil Oil obtained from the ground.
Porous Layer Rocks that contain empty spaces that can filled with air or water
Impermeable Layer Rocks layers that are usually made of clay, shale, igneous, or metamorphic rocks.
Refining The process of removing impurities or unwanted elements from oil.
Coal Hydrocarbon that is used as fuel to generate electricity.
Natural Gas Methane that is usually located near petroleum or coal.
Fracking Drilling method used to obtain oil or natural gas. Works by pumping fluid through a borehole to create fractures in rock layers
Electromagnet A type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by an electrical current
Solar Energy A clean, renewable energy resource that is harvested from the sun's energy.
Receiver Located on top of a solar power tower that concentrates reflective sunlight into a receiving fluid
Solar Cells Photovoltaic cells that turn sunlight directly into electricity.
Wind Energy A clean, renewable energy resource that is generated from wind.
Convection The movement of materials due to differences in temperature.
Wind Turbine A large windmill that turns wind energy into electrical energy with the aid of a generator.
Hydropower Also known as Hydroelectric energy or Hydroelectric power. It is a clean, renewable energy resource that generates electricity from moving water.
Penstock A pipe that feeds into a turbine within a hydropower dam.
Biomass Energy Renewable energy that comes from organic material of plants and animals.
Biofuel A fuel that is made from living matter. Includes ethanol and biodiesel
Geothermal Energy Renewable energy generated from heat within the Earth.
Energy Conservation Conservation of energy resources
Sustainable Transportation Low or 0 emission vehicles that do not contribute to green house emissions and help conserve nonrenewable resources
Carbon Footprint Individual impact of carbon or greenhouse gas emissions someone has on the environment.
Recycle Use material again or convert it into material that is reusable.
Reduce To make smaller lessen in size, such as reducing carbon emissions.
Reuse To use more than once.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
