Habit 4 Study Guide

Habit 4: Think Win-Win

QuestionAnswer
What is Habit 4? The Habit of Mutual Benefit (think win-win).
What do students who practice this habit do? They do their share of the work, and help others with their work too. You have courage to stand up for yourself, but also respect others.
What is the paradigm of win-lose? "I'm going to beat you no matter what." You're always trying to get ahead of others or be better than other people.
What is the paradigm of lose-win? “I always get stepped on.” You're not brave enough to stick up for yourself.
What is the paradigm of lose-lose? “If I’m going down, you’re going down with me.” If you can’t win, nobody wins.
What is the paradigm of win? “As long as I win, I don’t care if you win or lose.” Students with this paradigm think only of themselves and not others.
What is the paradigm of win-win or no deal? “Let’s find a solution that works for both of us, or let’s not play.” I want everyone to win.
What is an example of a win-win attitude? You share your best ideas with your study-group partners, believing that they will share their bests in return.
What is a scarcity mentality? The belief that the world is like a pie and there is only so much of it to go around. One person is the winner; everyone is a loser. Always a competition.
What is an abundance mentality? The belief that there is plenty of "pie" to go around for everybody. It is better to work together than against each other.
What is healthy competition? Competing with all your heart and energy, and do it with class and dignity.
What do win-win thinkers do? They balance courage with consideration, be happy for the successes of others, share credit and recognition, and make deposits in other people's Emotional Bank Accounts.
What are the two win-win principles? Courage and consideration (must be high in both categories).
What does high courage and consideration mean? You go for win-win or no deal. You're ready to walk away before someone loses, including yourself. Proactive patience. It takes courage to stand up for your own interests as well as the interests of other people.
What do people with a win-win mentality like to see? They genuinely glad to see other people succeed.
What do people with a win-win mentality like to share? They prefer to share recognition and to place credit where credit is due. Their feelings of self-worth don’t come from being better than someone else.
What does it mean to put deposits and withdrawal in other people's emotional bank accounts? Deposits are things you do to help your relationships and withdrawals are things you do to hurt your relationships.
What are eight deposits in people's emotional bank accounts? Find out what a deposit is for the other person, do small acts of kindness, keep promises, be loyal, set clear expectations, apologize, give feedback, and forgive.
What does it mean to find out what a deposit is for the other person? What you think is a deposit for the other person may in fact be a withdrawal in his or her mind. You won't know unless you find out. Ask them and communicate.
What does it mean to do small acts of kindness? Treat people with kindness like paying a compliment, smile at others, and greet people.
What does it mean to keep promises? A huge withdrawal in the emotional bank account is to break a serious promise. It is important to stay true to your words and be careful before using the words "I promise."
What does it mean to be loyal? Keep confidences, be loyal to the absent, avoid gossiping, and stick up for people.
What does it mean to set clear expectations? Don't leave things fuzzy. Need to be clear, and follow through on what's expected.
What does it mean to apologize? If you're in the wrong, admit it. Don't wait. Making excuses instead of making it better will make a bigger withdrawal.
What does it mean to give feedback? Sincere, honest feedback is a deposit to let people know how you feel. Don't hide things from people or keep them in the dark (withdrawal).
What does it mean to forgive? Learn to forgive and forget so you don't keep hurting yourself the way you were hurt.
What are the payoffs of win-win thinking? These people usually do well. They have the best friendships and, in business, are the ones with the best suppliers and customers.
