This study stack will help you understand the important words in this topic.

TermDefinition
Structures A compact organization of different parts that make it up.
Form The basic shape of a structure.
Function The purpose of a structure.
Solid Structures Structures that are not hollow and support an immense amount of weight.
Shell Structures A structure that is made out of a thin and strong layer that cover large areas.
Frame Structures A skinny structure that looks like a skeleton and supports the whole structure.
Force A push or pull motion.
External Forces A force that acts outside the structure.
Internal Forces A force that acts inside the structure.
Types of Internal Forces Torsion, Bending, Tension, Compression & Shear.
Types of External Forces Gravity, Spring & Air Resistance.
Torsion A force when on end of the structure twist and the other end twist in the opposite direction.
Tension A force that pulls one end of the structure in one way and the other end in the exact opposite.
Compression A force that pushes each end of the object inwards.
Shear A force where one half of the structure is pushed forward and the other half is pushed forward from the other side.
Bending One end of the structure is pulled into the other end.
Gravity A force that pulls an object with lesser mass than itself.
Plane of Application The side where the force meets the structure.
Point of Application The exact point where the force meets the structure.
Dynamic Load The forces that can move while it is on the structure.
Static Load The force of gravity acting upon the structure.
Combination Structures A structure that is made up of solid, frame and/or shell structure.
