imperialism | policy where a strong nation dominates another weaker nation. |
nationalism | having a sense of pride in one's country. |
industrialization | development of industries for machine production of goods rather than hand made. |
Zimmerman Telegram | telegram Germany sent to Mexico to convince Mexico to attack the US from the south and in exchange, Mexico would be able to win back Texas. |
The Lusitania | British passenger ship that was sunk by a German u-boat in 1915, killing 128 Americans. It helped sway American opinion to join WWI. |
Great Migration | migration of African Americans in the south to go north or mid-west in 1910-1960. |
Harlem Renaissance | Period in the 1920s when African American achievements in art, music, and literature flourished. Jazz became widely popular. |
Charleston Renaissance | multifaceted cultural renewal that took place in the years between the world wars and helped create the city's tourist industry. |
The Great Depression | economic crisis that occurred world wide. In the US it started with the stock market crash in 1929 and continuing through the 1930s. |
The New Deal | Series of reforms enacted by FDR's administration with the goal of ending the Great Depression. |
Social Security Act | Guaranteed retirement payments for enrolled workers beginning at age 65; |
Savannah River Nuclear Plant | constructed near Augusta to produce the basic materials used to create nuclear weapons in support of the nation's defense programs. |
Santee Cooper Project | provided hydroelectric power from the Santee and Cooper rivers and improved navigation from the coast to the midlands through the creation of Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie. |
Doolittle Raiders | Army Air forces who participated in an air raid during WWII that targeted major cities in Japan in 1942. |
Tuskegee Airmen | group of African American military pilots who fought in WWII. They trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama to protect bombers flying into Europe. Nicknamed the "red tails" |
American Internment Camps | camps created in the US for the purpose of confining people. In WWII Japanese Americans were targeted along with prisoners of war. |
rationing | setting limits on purchasing certain high demand items. People were issued a number of points or a ration book which showed you how much you could purchase. |
Woodrow Wilson | 28th president of the US known for WWI leadership. He created the 14 points post war plan. |
Franklin D. Roosevelt | 32nd president of the US responsible for creating the New Deal programs to help the nation get out of the Great Depression. He was also president during WWII. |
Langston Hughes | American poet and social activist who was a leader during the Harlem Renaissance |
Benjamin O. Davis Jr. | Captain of the Tuskegee Airmen and was the first black commander of an integrated fighter wing as well as the first black general in the Air Force. |
