TermDefinition
Biotic factors living organisms that are part of an environment.
Abiotic factors the non-living factors in an environment such as temperature, light, water, and nutrients.
Producers create, or produce, goods and provide services.
Consumers the people who buy goods and services.
Decomposers an organism (as a bacterium or a fungus) that feeds on and breaks down dead plant or animal matter.
Herbivore an organism that feeds mostly on plants.
Omnivore an organism that regularly consumes a variety of material, including plants, animals, algae, and fungi.
Carnivore an organism that mostly eats meat, or the flesh of animals.
Predator an animal that kills and eats other animals.
Prey an animal hunted or killed by another animal for food.
Terrestrial Ecosystem a land-based community of organisms and the interactions of biotic and abiotic components in a given area.
Aquatic Ecosystem living things that depend on the water for survival, such as fish, plants, and microorganisms.
Food chain the order in which organisms, or living things, depend on each other for food.
Food web a group of food chains within an ecosystem.
Energy pyramid a model that shows the flow of energy from one trophic, or feeding, level to the next in an ecosystem.
Competition the act or process of trying to get or win something (such as a prize or a higher level of success) that someone else is also trying to get or win.
Natural resources something that is found in nature and can be used by people.
Population the number of people living in a certain place.
Community a group of people living or working together in the same area.
Habitat the home of an animal or a plant.
Estuary an area at the end of a river that is in between land and the ocean.
Brackish somewhat salty.
