Westward Expansion Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Manifest Destiny The 19th century belief that God intended the U.S. to expand across North America to the Pacific Ocean.
wagon train A long line of covered wagons pulled by horses or oxen.
annex To join or add territory.
treaty A formal, written agreement between peoples or nations.
settler A person who moves to live in an area that has no or few previous inhabitants.
pioneer A person who is among the first to settle in an unsettled area.
wilderness. An unsettled region without the usual characteristics of civilization.
territory An area owned or controlled by a government but that does not have equal status with other administrative regions (such as provinces or states) in the rest of the country.
woodsman A person living or working in the woods (such as a hunter or woodcutter) who knows the forest well.
mining camp A temporary community that houses miners.
tradition A custom, belief, or ritual passed down from generation to generation.
prospector An explorer in search of gold, oil, minerals, or other valuable substances.
technology The use of science in industry to invent useful things or to solve problems.
republic A country governed by elected representatives and by an elected leader (such as a president).
physical barrier A physical feature that makes travel or migration more difficult.
physical gateway A physical feature that makes travel or migration easier.
