Adolf Hitler | German politician who was the leader of the Nazi Party, Chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945 and Führer of Nazi Germany. |
Anti-Semitism | Prejudice or hatred of Jews. |
Benito Mussolini | Italian fascist dictator and prime minister from 1922-1943 - who conducted an expansionist foreign policy, formalized an alliance with Germany in 1939, and brought Italy into World War II in 1940. |
Bolsheviks | A group of revolutionary Russian Marxists who took control of Russia’s government in November 1917. |
Collectivization | Pooling of land and labor in an effort to increase efficiency. |
Economic Depression | Sustained, long-term downturn in economic activity over the course of a normal business cycle. |
Fascism | a political movement that promotes an extreme form of nationalism, a denial of individual rights, and a dictatorial one-party rule. |
Five Year Plan | a plan outlined by Joseph Stalin in 1928 for the development of the Soviet Union’s economy. |
Great Depression | the severe economic slump that followed the collapse of the U.S. stock market in 1929. |
Great Purge | a campaign of terror in the Soviet Union during the 1930s, in which Joseph Stalin sought to eliminate all Communist Party members and other citizens who threatened his power. |
Inflation | economic cycle that involves a rapid rise in prices linked to a sharp increase in the amount of money available. |
Joseph Stalin | Russian leader who succeeded Lenin as head of the Communist Party and created a totalitarian state by purging all opposition. |
League of Nations | an international association formed after World War I with the goal of keeping peace among nations. |
Manchuria | After an explosion on a Japanese-controlled Southern railroad, was conquered by Japanese military forces in September 1931 and a puppet government was set up. |
Nazism | the fascist policies of the National Socialist German Workers’ party, based on totalitarianism, a belief in racial superiority, and state control of industry. |
Protective Tariffs | duties imposed on imports to raise their price, making them less attractive to consumers and thus protecting domestic industries from foreign competition. |
Reparations | payments for war damages or damages caused by imprisonment. |
Russian Revolution | 1917-1918, also called the October Revolution, that overthrew the czar and brought the Bolsheviks, a Communist party led by Lenin, to power. |
Stock Market | a particular market where stocks and bonds are traded. |
Stock Market Crash of 1929 | Also known as Black Tuesday was the most devastating economic crash in the history of the United States. |
Treaty of Versailles | a peace treaty signed by Germany and the Allied powers after World War I. |
Vladimir Lenin | leader of Russia’s 1917 Bolshevik revolution and the first leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. |
