What states were part of the English Middle Colonies? New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware
Fertile soil and a mild climate encouraged farming of which crops? Wheat, corn, and other grains
Who was in war for much of the 1600's in Europe? England & The Netherlands
England changed the name of New Netherland to what? New York
Who did they name New York after in their honor? Duke of York
While transitioning to English rule in what had been New Netherland, people did much of what they used to before. What did they continued to do? Speak Dutch, continue worshipping in their own churches and were able to keep their land.
Why did people come from all over Europe to the colony? Tolerant of religious and ethnic differences and women were allowed to have more rights.
If you were an enslaved African and worked for the Dutch East India Company, you could gain what? Half Freedom which supplied slave labor only during certain times of the year.
What law did the English pass because they feared rebellion from the growing number of enslaved people? It was illegal to gather in groups more than two people.
What happened in 1733? A man named John Zenger printed newspaper articles that criticized the governor of New York, because of this he was arrested and put on trial .
Who defended John Zenger in his trial? Andrew Hamilton
What did Penn join and what was it also known as? Society of Friends A.K.A Quakers
What did each person of this group believe? All people should be treated fairly, women were equal to men, against war, and ended up becoming a strong opponent to slavery.
Why did Penn create a place Quakers could worship and what did he call it? To worship without fear and called it "The Holy Experiment"
