The brain
Term | Function |
---|---|
Cerebrum | Largest part of the brain. It initiates and coordinates movement and regulates temperature. Other areas of the cerebrum enables speech, judgement, thinking, reasoning, problem solving, emotions and learning. Other functions relate to vision, hearing, touc |
Frontal lobe | Controls voluntary movement, expressive language and for managing higher level functions of a collection of cognitive skill such as, the capacity to plan, organize, initiate, self-monitor and control one's responses to achieve a goal. |
Parietal lobe | Responsible for receiving and processing sensory input such as touch, pressure, heat, cold, and pain. Involved in the perception of body awareness. |
Occipital lobe | Responsible for visuospatial processing, distance and depth perception, color determination, object and facial recognition, and memory formation. |
Temporal lobe | Responsible for processing auditory information and with the encoding of memory. Houses many of our memories. |
Cerebellum | Responsible for muscle control, including balance and movement. |
Motor Cortex | Generates signals to direct the movement of the body. It is part of the frontal lobe. |
Sensory Cortex | Process and make sense of information gathered by our five senses. |
Corpus Callosum | Thick bundle of nerve fibers that connect the two cerebral hemispheres, allowing them to communicate. It is also involved movement control, cognitive functions and vision. |
Thalamus | Relays all information from your body's senses (except from smell). That information is processed in the Thalamus before being sent to your brain's cerebral cortex for interpretation. |
Hypothalamus | Helps manage your body temperature, hunger and thirst, mood, sex drive, blood pressure and sleep. |
Pituitary gland | Regulates many bodily functions through hormones produced such as growth and sexual/reproductive development and function. |
Amygdala | Controls sexual and social behavior. |
Hippocampus | Involved in memory, learning, and emotion. Its largest job is to hold short-term memories and transfer them to long-term storage in our brains. |
Pons | Links your brain to your spinal cord. Handles all your unconscious movements and processes. |
Medulla Oblongata | Helps control vital processes like your heartbeat, breathing and blood pressure. |
