Anaphora | Repeating the first word in a series of successive clauses for emphasis and organization |
Epistrophe | Like an anaphora, but repeating the last word. |
Anthimeria | "Inventing" new words by making nouns into verbs or vice versa |
Aporia | A false display of self-doubt or ignorance |
Dialysis | "This-not-that" figure ("Don't hear my voice - hear my words.") |
Dysphemism | Substitution of a derogatory word for a more favorable or neutral one (loony bin) |
Hypophora | Posing a rhetorical situation that you immediately answer |
Metanoia | The speaker interrupts their own point to correct themselves for a stronger point |
Paralipsis | Mentioning something by saying you're not going to mention it |
Zeugma | Using multiple meanings of the same word in close succession for effect |
Juxtaposition | Contrast: Placing two things side by side to highlight their differences |
Paradox | Contrast: A statement that seems contradictory but in reality expresses a possible truth "Less is more" |
Antithesis | Contrast: Two opposite ideas put together in a sentence to achieve a contrasting effect |
Conceits | Representation: Extended metaphor between two very dissimilar things |
Analogy | Representation: Explicit comparison between two things (raising a child like nurturing a garden) |
Induction | Logic: Moves from specific instances to a general conclusion to apply to all instances |
Refutation | Logic: Disproving an opposing argument |
Subordination | Emphasis: Combining two sentences or ideas in a way that makes one more important than the other using conjunctions |
Fragment | Emphasis: A deliberate sentence fragment for emphasis - incomplete sentences |
Call back | Balance: A relevant reference to an event that happened earlier in the narrative. Sometimes used to tie up loose ends |
Coord. Conjunctions | Balance: Joining words or clauses which words in FANBOYS for equal importance |
Compare/Contrast | MOD: Can be the entirety of the narrative, analyzing two or more ideas using an established logical system. |
