Biomes

| alpine tundra | biome that would most likely be found at the top of a mountain |
| biodiversity | the variety and amount of species of plants and animals that are found in a specific area |
| biome | A large area of the earth with plants and animals that share a similar environment; a mountain can have more than one type; a way to divide the biosphere into smaller sections. |
| biosphere | all the areas where life can exist and the organisms that live there |
| bogs | always have fresh water |
| canopy | rainforest layer where trees grow closely together |
| climate | The usual weather of a region over a long period of time; determines the types of plants and animals in a biome |
| coniferous forest | has many trees that are cone bearing; largest land biome; Taiga is another name for this |
| coral reefs | "Rainforests of the sea" known for having great biodiversity |
| deciduous forest | wet biome; receives precipitation throughout the year; has many trees that lose their leaves in the winter |
| deserts | biomes that are very dry; can be hot or cold |
| emergent | the layer that gets the most sunlight |
| extreme temperatures | characteristic of deserts |
| floor | the place in a tropical rainforest where termites, fungi, and bacteria grow |
| freshwater biomes | pond; streams; rivers; lakes |
| grassland | the main vegetation is grass |
| gravity | causes fresh water to flow downhill toward the ocean |
| marine biomes | also called saltwater biomes |
| mountain | has several biomes with different climates |
| nocturnal | animals active at night and at rest during the day |
| number of seasons in a prairie | four |
| ocean | the largest marine biome |
| peat | partially decayed plant material that piles up in bogs |
| permafrost | permanently frozen snow |
| Prairie grasses | often have roots that are matted together and that spread deep underground |
| prairies | temperate grasslands |
| salinity | the amount of dissolved salt in the water (varies with each biome) |
| savannas | tropical grasslands; have two seasons |
| some of the ocean zones | tide pools, coral reefs, oceans |
| succulents | plants that can store water in their stems or leaves |
| tropical rainforest | biome with a humid, rainy, and warm climate; many of its animals live in the treetops |
| tundra | coldest biome; has a cold and dry climate |
| understory | plants often have large leaves and do not need much sunlight |
| water and energy | things conserved by animals that rest during the hot part of the day |
| wetlands | can form at the transition between a water biome and a land biome; land that is almost always wet |
