Romanelli Chapter 12

Changes in Matter

QuestionAnswer
Know the difference between a physical change and a chemical change. In a physical change the substance keeps its identity, change of phase is a physical change. In a chemical change a new substance is made, with different physical and chemical properties.
Know the signs of a chemical reaction. A change in color, a change in odor, bubbles forming, solids forming, and increase or decrease in temperature.
Know about the 3 kinds of chemical reaction. Decomposition – a compound splits to form smaller compounds or elements. Combination – elements or compounds come together to form new larger compounds. Replacement – when molecules or compounds split apart and switch places to become new compounds.
What is a polymer? A large molecule that is made from many smaller identical units linked together.
Define and understand combustion. Combustion is the burning of a substance, it is a chemical change because something new is made, ashes, smoke is created, heat is given off, and there is a change in color.
Understand chemical equations and their parts. Reactants (always on left) Products (always on right) ( means turns into)
What is Universal Indicator Paper used for and what do the colors mean? UIP is a paper that has been chemically treated to react with both acids and bases. This paper helps to identify an unknow substance by determining the overall type of substance as an acid or a base and its strength.
What is Universal Indicator Paper used for and what do the colors mean? It is helpful in identifying a substance but is unable to do so on its own. It only narrows it down. Red, orange, and yellow, are acids in order from strongest to weakest. Purple, blue, and green are bases in order from strongest to weakest.
How have chemical properties been used to create and change natural products ? Nylon was created in a lab as a man made substitution for silk. Silk is difficult and expensive to make so an easier and less expensive alternative was created.
How have chemical properties been used to create and change natural products ? Rubber is an example of a man made product that is a modified natural product. Natural rubber is soft and wears away easily, it cracks in cold temperatures, gets sticky in warm temperature, and becomes brittle with age.
How have chemical properties been used to create and change natural products ? By heating natural rubber and adding sulfur under pressure, it is more durable, does not crack at cold temperatures, does not get sticky at high temperatures, does not crack with age, and wears more slowly.
Alexander Flemming Alexander Flemming made an accidental discovery that led to the creation of Penicillin, an antibiotic. He found mold growing in his lab experiment and noticed that it killed the bacteria he had been trying to stop.
What is the Law of conservation of mass? Explain in detail. The law of conservation of mass states that matter can not be created or destroyed during a chemical reaction, only changed into other matter.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
