Storge affectionate love; “Best understood as family love. It’s the kind of easy bond that naturally forms between parents and their children and sometimes between siblings in the same household. This kind of love is steady and sure; care of mother to child
Philia friendly love/friendship; the love dismissed; a friend; someone dearly loved (prized) in a personal, intimate way; a trusted confidant held dear in a close bond of personal affection
Eros romance/passion; Different than friendship, lovers, “are always talking to one another about their love;" are absorbed with each other; Eros portrays the idea of passion and intensity of feeling.
Agape Godly love; charity; the unconditional love of the Father given to us through his Son. Affection, friendship and romantic love are each the training ground for charity to grow; the selfless, unconditional type of love that helps people to forgive
Theodicy the vindication of divine goodness and providence in view of the existence of evil; a branch of philosophy dealing with the issue of evil in light of the existence of God. The narrative focuses on this idea.

Dona Clara Doña María's daughter. In response to her mother's oppressively intense love, Doña Clara becomes emotionally unresponsive and attempts to distance herself from her mother as much as possible; she marries a Spanish nobleman and moves to Spain.
Madre Maria del Pilar the abbess; she has a large influence in Lima; she is a nun who oversees many charitable works; she brought up Pepita and gave her the task of helping Doña María
Pepita an orphan girl who the Marquessa has taken on as a companion and helper. Pepita has devotion in her heart for Madre Maria del Pilar and she longs to be loved. She writes a letter expressing this
Esteban One of the abandoned twin brothers taken in by the abbess; he is close to his brother, Manuel, developing his own language; works as a scribe and errand boy; pretends to be Manuel and almost commits suicide
Manuel Esteban's twin brother; he falls in love with Camila Perichole, agreeing to write letters for her for her lovers. He renounces her to preserve his relationship with Esteban; he dies of infection from hurting his knee.
Captain Alvarado a Peruvian explorer who is well known; he travels because he mourns his daughter's death. He is friends with the Abbess. He connects with Esteban, offering to let him be part of his crew and preventing him from committing suicide.
Uncle Pio found Micaela Villegas, (aka Camila Perichole) when she was 12 and singing in a cafe. He was her maid, teacher, and caretaker: her everything. He molded her into a famous actress and raised her; father figure
Camila Perichole the talented actress/singer who is raised by Uncle Pio; she becomes renowned in Lima, but later shuts herself away after she contracts smallpox. She is a volatile and selfish character for most of the novel.
Don Jaime The young son of Camila Perichole; he is isolated by his mother, and later killed on the bridge along with Uncle Pio, who wanted to take him under his wing for a year.
Thornton Wilder The author of "The Bridge of San Luis Rey."
1714 The year the bridge collapses; on Friday noon, July the 20th, 1714.
1928 The date in which "The Bridge of San Luis Rey" earned the Pulitzer Prize.
