Huang He | River in China that flows 2,900 miles, carrying rich yellow silt. Also known as the Yellow River. |
Yangtze River | River in China that flows 3,400 miles and empties into the Yellow Sea. |
dynasty | A line of rulers that belong to the same family. |
Anyang | China’s first capital. |
aristocrats | Upper Class nobles whose wealth came from the land they owned. |
pictographs | Characters that stand for objects. |
ideographs | Two Chinese pictographs joined together to represent an idea. |
bureaucracy | Appointed officials who are responsible for different areas of government. |
social class | Includes people who share a similar position in society. |
Confucianism | The belief that people should put the needs of their family first and all men with talent should have government jobs |
Silk Road | Series of trade routes from China to North Africa and the Mediterranean. |
oracle bones | Pieces of bone used for telling the future in China |
The Great Wall | A wall that runs thousands of miles across china. |
Buddhism | A new religion from India started by Buddha. Buddhism focused on finding the truth about the world by giving up all desires. |
nobles | Members of royal or wealthy families. |
philosophy | Views of a certain person or organization. |
The Mandate of Heaven | A heavenly law that gave the Zhou king the power to rule. |
Dao | The Zhou kings duty was to keep the gods happy by ruling according to the proper “Way” or DAO |
Daoism | The belief that people should give up worldly desires in favor of nature and pleasing the gods |
