Weather vocab

TermDefinition
Latitude geographic coordinates that specifies the north or south of the equator
Longitude distance measured in degrees east or west from an imaginary line (called he prime meridian) that goes from the north pole to the south pole
Hemisphere a half of the earth, usually divided into the northern and southern halves by the equator , or into western and eastern halves by imaginary lines passing through the poles
Atmosphere the envelope of gasses surrounding the earth
Weather the state of the atmosphere at a place and time as regards heat, dryness, sunshine, precipitation and wind
Climate the average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time
Polar formed in polar regions and are cold
Continental formed over land and are dry
Maritime Climate zones formed over bodies off water and are humid
Rain Frozen precipitation melts and reaches the ground as rain
freezing Rain Frozen precipitation melts in warm air, rain falls and freezes on cold surfaces
Sleet Frozen precipitation melts in the shallow warm air, then refreezes into sleet before reaching the surface
Snow rain falls through cold air and reaches the surface
Hail rain that freezes over and over again and falls down as hard frozen rocks
Rain Gauge a device used to measure the amount of rainfall in an area
Wind the movement of air from high air pressure to low pressure
Anemometer a device used to measure the speed of the wind
Wind Vane a device used to show the direction of the wind
Coriolis Effect a force that affects a the wind over the earth because its rotating
Trade Winds winds that meet at the equator
Prevailing Winds Winds that meet at around 30 latitude
Polar Easterlies Winds that meet at the polar's that deflect toward the east
Land Breeze Wind from land
Sea Breeze Cool air in morning warm air at night; comes from sea
Air Pressure The weight of the air pushing on everything around it
Low Pressure a mass of warm moist air cause by a drop in air pressure
High Pressure a mass of cool dry air caused by an increase in air pressure
Cold Front When the cooler air mass overcomes the warmer air mass it is called a cold front
Warm Front When the warmer air mass overcomes the cooler air mass it s called a warm front
Front The collision of two large air masses
El Ni`no a weather phenomenon occurring every 2-7 years when the water temperatures rise in the equitorial pacific
