Simile Comparison between two things using "like" or "as"
Metaphor Comparison between two things NOT using "like" or "as"
Personification Giving human traits to a nonhuman object
Hyperbole An extreme exaggeration
Onomatopoeia Sound effect words (Crash, boom, bang)
Imagery Descriptive language that appeals to the five senses
Alliteration Repetition of consonant sounds in words close together (Big, Brown Bear Bites Blueberries)
Idiom An expression NOT meant to be taken literally (It is raining cats and dogs outside)
Tone The AUTHOR'S attitude toward the subject of the poem
Mood The feeling a poem creates within the READER
Structure The way a poem looks on a page
Stanza A paragraph in a poem
Line Can be a single word, a sentence, or a part of a sentence
Speaker The voice that "talks" to the readers
Rhyme Scheme A pattern of end rhymes in a poem
Internal Rhyme Rhyme within a line
Rhythm Pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line
End Rhyme Rhyme at the ends of lines
Free Verse A poem with no rhyme scheme
Narrative poem A poem that tells a story.
Repetition Repeated use of sounds, words, or ideas for effect and emphasis
Denotation Dictionary definition of a word; literal meaning
Connotation All the meanings, associations, or emotions that a word/poem suggests
Theme The life lesson, or moral, of a story or poem.
Lyric Poem A poem that expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poet, often with musical quality.
