Simile | Comparison between two things using "like" or "as" |
Metaphor | Comparison between two things NOT using "like" or "as" |
Personification | Giving human traits to a nonhuman object |
Hyperbole | An extreme exaggeration |
Onomatopoeia | Sound effect words (Crash, boom, bang) |
Imagery | Descriptive language that appeals to the five senses |
Alliteration | Repetition of consonant sounds in words close together (Big, Brown Bear Bites Blueberries) |
Idiom | An expression NOT meant to be taken literally (It is raining cats and dogs outside) |
Tone | The AUTHOR'S attitude toward the subject of the poem |
Mood | The feeling a poem creates within the READER |
Structure | The way a poem looks on a page |
Stanza | A paragraph in a poem |
Line | Can be a single word, a sentence, or a part of a sentence |
Speaker | The voice that "talks" to the readers |
Rhyme Scheme | A pattern of end rhymes in a poem |
Internal Rhyme | Rhyme within a line |
Rhythm | Pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line |
End Rhyme | Rhyme at the ends of lines |
Free Verse | A poem with no rhyme scheme |
Narrative poem | A poem that tells a story. |
Repetition | Repeated use of sounds, words, or ideas for effect and emphasis |
Denotation | Dictionary definition of a word; literal meaning |
Connotation | All the meanings, associations, or emotions that a word/poem suggests |
Theme | The life lesson, or moral, of a story or poem. |
Lyric Poem | A poem that expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poet, often with musical quality. |
