Word Analysis and Identification Skills
Term | Definition |

Phonics | - pertains to the relationship of sounds and letters. |
Consonants | - a speech sound that is not a vowel. |
Vowels | - letters that represent speech sounds where air leaves the mouth without any blockage by the tongue, lips, or throat. A, E, I , O, U, and sometimes Y |
Inflectional Endings | - a word part added to the end of a base word changes the number or tense of a base word. |
Compound Words | - composed of two or more words that, when combined, make a new word with its own unique meaning. |
Contractions | - formed by using the apostrophe to show where one or more letters or syllables have been omitted to create a shorter form of a word or set of words. |
Prefix | - an affix at the beginning of a word. |
Suffix | - an affix at the end of a word. |
