What does the cell membrane do? | Controls transport of substances into the cell |
Where is energy released? | Mitochondria |
Where are proteins made? | Ribosomes |
Where does photosynthesis occur? | chloroplast |
differences between prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cells (4) | prokaryotic cell has a single loop of DNA prokaryotic cell has plasmids prokaryotic cell has no mitochondria prokaryotic cell has no nucleus |
prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cells both have .... ? (4) | cytoplasm (cell) membrane DNA / genetic material ribosomes |
what is mitosis? | cell division that enables cells to grow and develop, repair or replace damaged cells |
what is the first stage of a cell cycle? | DNA / chromosomes replicate / duplicate |
What is the second stage of a cell cycle? | one set of chromosomes is moved to each end of the cell |
What is the third stage of a cell cycle? | the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide to form two cells |
what does a red blood cell do? | carry oxygen |
what does a nerve cell do? | carry electrical impulse |
what does an egg cell do? | gets fertilised by sperm |
what does a sperm cell do? | fertilises an egg cell |
what does a muscle cell do? | causes movement as it contracts and relaxes |
how has a red blood cell adapted? | no nucleus and contains haimoglobin |
how has a nerve cell adapted? | it's very long |
how has an egg cell adapted? | it has a large cytoplasm to carry lots of nutrients |
how has a sperm cell adapted? | has a tail to swim, has lots of mitochondria to release energy |
what does a root hair cell do? | absorbs water and minerals from the soil |
how has root hair cell adapted? | long and thin to maximise surface area |
what does a palisade cell in leaves do? | absorbs light and photosynthesises to produce glucose |
how has a palisade cell adapted? | lots of chloroplasts near the top to absorb as much light as possible |
what do xylem cells do? | carry water up a plant from the roots to the leaves |
how has a xylem cell adapted? | hollow to make as much room as possible |
what do phloem cells do? | carry dissolved sugars from where they are made |
how has a phloem cell adapted? | has sieve tubes with no nuclei and companion cells with mitochondria to release energy |
what is differentiation? | the process by which a cell changes to become specialised for its job |
what is specialised? | a cell that performs a specific function |
