Nervous and Endocrine System (Psychology 1)

TermDefinition
Neuron Fundamental Units of the Brain and Nervous System
Dendrite The end of a Neuron where it receives input from other Neurons
Axon The line on which an input travels toward the axon terminal
Axon Terminal Where a neuron exerts output
Action potential The movement of input down a neuron
Resting potential The state of the neuron between action potentials
All-or-None Principle A Neuron will always give the same amount of energy, never more and never less
Synapse The distance between two neurons that allow for the exchange of input
Neurotransmitters Carry messages from one neuron to another
Excitatory effect Increases the likelihood of an action potential
Inhibitory effect Decreases the likelihood of an action potential
Receptor Cells Receives Stimulus and reacts to it.
Sensory Nerves Nerves that carry smell, taste, sight, hearing and feeling messages to the brain
Interneurons Connect the different parts of the brain
Central nervous system Nervous system made up of the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system The nerves that branch out from the central nervous system
somatic nervous system controls the muscles
autonomic nervous system Runs the organs
Sympathetic division Runs fight or flight response
parasympathetic division runs the state of relaxation
endocrine system The glands that make hormones
Hormone Causes responses in the body
Pituitary gland Makes and stores hormones
