1. Who was Lucius Junius Brutus? Lucius Junius Brutus led a group of patricians in a rebellion. They overthrew the Etruscan king and established a republic in 509 BC
2. What type of government was there under Etruscan rule? Under the rule of the Etruscans, the type of government was a monarchy.
3. The citizens of Rome were split into what two groups? The patricians who were wealthy, and the plebeians who were the common people.
4. What percent of Rome's population were plebeians? 95 percent of Rome's population were plebeians.
5. How did the plebeians achieve political equality? The plebeians rebelled and left the city. The patricians feared being attacked and compromised to give them more power.
Lesson 23
1. Describe Rome's 1st period of expansion. It began in 509 B.C.E. The Romans rebelled against the Etruscans, became a republic, and controlled central Italy.
2. Describe Rome's 2nd period of expansion. During Rome's second period of expansion, it fought three wars for control of the Mediterranean region called the Punic Wars.
3. Describe Rome's 3rd period of expansion. By the end of Rome's third period of expansion, the republic collapsed. Caesar became dictator for life, but was assassinated.
4. Describe Rome's 4th period of expansion. The fourth period of expansion began with the start of the empire and lasted until 14 C.E.
5. Who seized power after Caesar was assassinated? After Caesar was assassinated, his grandnephew Octavian seized power, becoming the first emperor, Caesar Augustus.
Lesson 24
1. Was the Senate disbanded when Rome became an empire? No, the Senate continued to meet, and senators had high status in society.
2. What was the ultimate source of law? In the empire, the ultimate source of law was the emperor.
3. How did wealthy Romans live? Wealthy Romans lived in large houses, built of stone and marble, with many rooms for the family and guests.
4. How did poor Romans live? Many poor Romans lived in tall apartment buildings. The apartments were cramped, noisy, and dirty.
5. What were some sources of entertainment in ancient Rome? Romans watched gladiator fights in large public arenas, and chariot races at the Circus Maximus, a huge racetrack.
Lesson 25
1. What are some reasons for the decline of the Roman empire? Political instability, the inability to peacefully transfer power, and financial problems all led to the decline of Rome
2. What is the name of the eastern empire that lasted 1,000 years after the western half dissolved? The eastern empire was called the Byzantine Empire.
3. What influenced Roman art? The Romans were influenced by the art of the Greeks, which inspired historians to create the term “Greco-Roman” art.
4. What philosophy did many Romans follow? Many Romans followed the philosophy known as Stoicism . To Stoics, the key to life was to maintain a good character.
5. What languages developed from Latin? Several modern European languages developed from Latin, including Italian, Spanish, French, and English.
