How did most immigrants get to the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s? by boat
What did most immigrants come to the United States hoping for? better opportunities, religious freedom, fair government
Why did immigrants establish close-knit communities? They wanted to live around people who shared their culture
What cultural characteristics did members of the close-knit communities established by German, Polish, Irish, Italian, and other immigrant groups usually share? food, religion, language, customs
How did immigration impact cities like Boston and New York City? Immigrants settled in cities near where they arrived because they needed to find work as soon as possible. They needed to find work as soon as possible because they did not have much money.
Describe Ellis Island. It was a large immigration station where immigration officers asked immigrants why they had come, where they planned to live, and what they planned to do. Many European immigrants came there and more that 90% of immigrants were allowed entry.
