1. Who was Homer? Homer was a Greek poet who wrote the epic poems the Iliad and Odyssey, which told stories set during and after the Trojan War.
2. How did the Greeks try to comprehend things about nature and humans that they didn't understand? The Greeks created myths about their gods to create explanations for things beyond their comprehension.
3. Who is Zeus? Zeus is the ruler of all the gods and lives on Mount Olympus. He is the god of the sky and lightning.
4. What war was fought during the 1200s BC? The Trojan war was fought during the 1200s BC. It was a ten year war between the Mycenaeans and Troy.
5. What were the biggest influences to Greek culture and traditions? The biggest influences to the Greek culture and traditions were the location and the geography of the region.
Unit 6 Lesson 18
1. Was Ancient Greece one united country? No, Ancient Greece was made up of several isolated communities.
2. What is a monarchy? In a monarchy, one individual had all the governing power, and is elected, or inherits the crown.
3. What is an oligarchy? In an oligarchy, multiple wealthy individuals who own lots of land, rule the city-state.
4. What is a tyranny? In a tyranny, a single person takes power by force. They are usually unlawful rulers.
5. What is a democracy? In a democracy, all the citizens share the power. Decisions are usually made through voting.
Unit 6 Lesson 19
1. Were Athens and Sparta similar in their ways of life? No, Athens and Sparta were completely different in almost every way.
2. How did Athens and Sparta's geography affect them? Athens was near the sea, resulting in them developing relationships with other city-states. Sparta was isolated, and believed contact with other city-states would weaken them.
3. What was the Council of 500 in Athens? A group of 500 citizens that form a council responsible for doing the job of a government.
4. How did Athens and Sparta's economies differ? Athens relied on trade, while Sparta relied on farming and conquering their neighbors.
5. What was the Council of Elders in Sparta? A group of 30 Spartans (2 kings and 28 nobles) who made all the important governing decisions.
Unit 6 Lesson 20
1. Who inspired the Athenians the rebuild Athens? Pericles inspired the people of Athens to rebuild their home. He also promoted the construction of public spaces and the growth of Greek culture.
2. What did the Greeks believe about their gods and goddesses? Ancient Greeks believed that each god had power over a specific area of life. The gods and goddesses were part of everyday life.
3. Were Greek temples used as a place to worship? No, religious ceremonies were held outside of the temple. The temples were built as dwellings for the god they honor.
4. Who was one of the most influential philosophers from Athens? Socrates was one of the most influential Athenian philosopher. He constantly questioned the work around him and his student taught Aristotle.
5. What were the two main times that ancient Greeks competed in athletic events? The Panathenaic Games, which took place during a festival that honored Athena, and the Olympics which took place every four years and honored Zeus.
Unit 6 Lesson 21
1. How did the Greeks influence English literature? The English alphabet, many English words, and the rules of English grammar, punctuation, and paragraphing are all based on Greek writing.
2. How did the Greeks influence modern medicine? A Greek named Hippocrates established principles of medicine that are still relevant. Greek medical students researched human anatomy and could name/describe several organs.
3. How did the Greeks influence mathematics? They developed important mathematical theories. Euclid's geometry textbook is used to teach basic geometry to this day.
4. How did the Greeks influence geography? The Greek historian Herodotus created the first map of the known world. A Greek named Ptolemy created latitude and longitude.
5. How did the Greeks influence modern biology? Greeks developed biology. Modern classification systems are based on the work of a Greek named Aristotle.
