This is the first set of words for AP Lit and Comp.

Adjunct (noun) something incidental or not essential that is added to something else
Bellwether (adjective) a leader, esp. one followed unquestioningly (also, sheep with a bell)
Caterwaul (verb) to make a yowling noise, as a cat on heat
Chimerical (adjective) wildly fanciful; imaginary
Effete (adjective) exhausted of vitality or strength; worn out; spent
Fait accompli (noun) something already done and beyond alteration
Hidebound (adjective) restricted by petty rules, a conservative attitude, etc.
Hierarchy (noun) a system of persons or things arranged in a graded order
Liturgy (noun) the forms of public services (ceremonies) officially prescribed by a Church
Mirage (noun) something illusory
Morass (noun) a disordered or muddled situation or circumstance, esp. one that impedes progress
Noisome (adjective) offensive or disgusting, as an odor.
Oblivious (adjective) unmindful; unconscious; unaware (usually followed by {of} or {to}
Poltroon (noun) a wretched coward; craven.
Proselyte (noun) a person who has changed from one opinion, religious belief, sect, or the like, to another; convert.
Quasi (adjective) resembling; seeming; virtual
Raillery (noun) good-humored ridicule; banter.
Ribald (adjective) vulgar or indecent in speech, language, etc.; coarsely mocking, abusive, or irreverent; scurrilous.
Supine (adjective) lying on the back, face or front upward; inactive. passive, or inert, especially from indolence, or indifference.
Vignette (noun) any small, pleasing picture or view; a small, graceful literary sketch.
