Prussia German state located on the southwest coast of the Baltic Sea
Hapsburg Ruling dynasty that defended the Catholic faith while ruling over the Holy Roman Empire in modern day Germany
Charlemagne Crowned emperor by the pope and ruled over the largest area of land in Europe (764-814)
Abdication To formally leave or give up a throne
Absolutism Political practice of one ultimate and centralized authority over a country, usually as a monarch or dictator
Enlightenment An intellectual and political movement in Europe with an emphasis on reason, liberty, and separation of powers
Divine Right Political doctrine that encourages absolutism stating that a monarch's right to rule comes from God, not the people
Palace of Versailles Massive palace built in France by Louis XIV
Leviathan Written by Thomas Hobbes; defends absolute monarchy describing humans as living in a primitive state of nature
Sovereign An ultimate ruler; someone who possesses much political power.
Magna Carta Document that guarantees English political liberties, signed by King James
Glorious Revolution A bloodless exchange of power in England when James II war run out of England by William and Mary
Parliament Governing body in England meant to represent the peopleBa
