City | A political, economic, and cultural center with a large population |
Fertile | Encouraging the growth of crops and plants |
Secondary source | An artifact or writing created after an event by someone who did not see it or live during the time when it occurred |
Hunter-Gatherer | A human who hunts animals and gathers wild plants to eat |
Trade | The exchange of goods |
Oral history | An unwritten account of events that is often passed down through the generations as stories or songs |
Civilization | A society with a highly developed culture and technology |
Agriculture | The practice of growing plants and rearing animals for food |
Specialized worker | A person who performs a job other than farming, such as metalworking, weaving, or toolmaking |
Government | An organization setup to make and enforce rules in a society |
Primary source | An artifact or piece of writing that was created by someone who witnessed or lived through a historical event |
Surplus | More than is required or necessary; extra |
Technology | The application of knowledge, tools, and inventions to meet people's needs |
Indian Ocean | Ocean located between Africa and Australia |
Pacific Ocean | The largest ocean that is located between Asia and Australia and North and South America |
Atlantic Ocean | The body of water between North America and Europe |
Geographic location | The place on earth that a civilization is found, including the land and its' resources |
Natural resources | Materials such as minerals, forests, water, and fertile land that are found in nature and can be used to benefit people in civilizations |
Economy | A system for making and providing resources, goods, and services to meet people's wants |
Timeline | A list of events put in chronological order on a line |

BCE | Before the Common Era, before year 1 of the current era of history |
AD | Anno Domini, or during the current era of history |
CE | Common Era, or during the current era of history |
Geography | The study of the earth and how it affects its' people |
Advanced cities | Areas with a large population where trade occurs |
Neolithic Revolution | The switch from nomadic lifestyles to a settled agricultural lifestyle is this revolution |
City-state | A city that with its surrounding territory forms an independent state |
