Q1 Literary Terms
Term | Definition |

Direct characterization | is when the writer specifically states the characters' traits or characteristics |
Setting | the time and place of the action in a story; the backdrop |
Methods of characterization | physical appearance speech and actions inner thoughts and feelings others' reactions/opinions |
Exposition | introduces the characters, setting, and the basic situation |
Conflict | The event that hooks the reader and introduces the main problem; sets the protagonist on their journey |
Indirect characterization | is when a writer depends on the reader to draw conclusions about the character's traits |
Rising action | This is where the majority of the action takes place and tension builds until it reaches a high point |
Author's Purpose | the reason an author writes a piece of literature (Persuade, Inform, Entertain) |
Exterior/external conflict | a character struggles against an outside force (examples - person vs. person, person vs. weather, person vs. technology, person vs. society) |
Resolution | loose ends are tied up, the reader understands if the protagonist was able to resolve their main conflict |
Falling action | Action that follows the highest point of excitement, and it leads the reader to the end of the story |
Interior/internal conflict | takes place within the mind of a character as they struggle to make a decision, take action, or overcome a feeling (example - person vs. self) |
Climax | Turning point in the story, some type of confrontation occurs (external or internal) |
Infer | conclusion you come to after reading something |
theme | a statement the author is making about life or people in general |
