Dictator | A person who rules with total authority |

Public works | The systems and facilities that keep a city going |
Barbarian | A person who lived outside the Roman Empire |
Inflation | An increase in the price of goods and services compared to the value of money |
Emperor | The supreme ruler of an empire |
Icon | A religious image of Jesus or a saint |
Patriarch | The leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church |
Eastern Orthodox Church | Consisting of the Christian churches that originated in the church of the Eastern Roman Empire and do not recognize the authority of the pope |
Pope | Leader of the Roman Catholic Church |
Ottoman Empire | A Muslim empire based in Turkey that lasted from the 1300's to 1922. |
Byzantine Empire | Eastern half of the Roman Empire that survived the fall of the Western half. |
