QuestionAnswer
Cause and Effect A relationship between events and processes where one causes the other.
Character A person, animal, or figure represented in a text.
Coherence The clear and orderly presentation of ideas in your writing and speaking.
Connotation The suggested or implied meaning or emotion associated with a word.
Denotation The literal meaning of a word.
Dialogue Conversation between characters in a text.
External Conflict A character struggles with an outside force, such as another character.
Foreshadowing Clues or hints signaling events that will occur later in the plot of a story.
Incident The central piece of action that is the focus of the narrative.
Internal Conflict A character struggles with his or her own needs, desires, or emotions.
Metaphor Compares two unlike things without using words like or as.
Personal Narrative A story based on one's own life and told in the first person.
Personification Figurative language that gives human characteristics to an animals, idea, or nonliving object.
Plot The sequence or related events that make up a story.
Point of View The perspective from which a story or poem is told.
Reflection A description that explains the significance of the incident.
Response The immediate emotions and actions associated with the incident.
Sequence To put things in order.
Setting Where or when a story takes place.
Short Story A fictional narrative that presents a sequence of events, or plot that includes a conflict.
Simile Compares two unlike things using words such as like or as.
Theme The central idea, message, topic, or purpose of a literary work.
Transitions Words that link two ideas, sentences, or paragraphs by showing their relationship.
