homo erectus Means "upright man." Lived from approx. 1.6 million to 250,000 BC
homo sapiens the primate species to which modern humans belong; humans regarded as a species. Lived from approx. 4,000 BC to present time
hunter-gatherer is a human living in a society in which most or all food is obtained by foraging (collecting wild plants and pursuing wild animals.)
archaeologist a person who studies human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts and other physical remains
domestication the process of taming an animal or the cultivation of a plant for food
climate change a change in global or regional climate patterns
the Stone Age a prehistoric period when weapons and tools were made of stone or organic materials, such as bone, wood, or horn
Paleolithic Period the early phase of the Stone Age, lasting about 2.5 million years, when primitive stone tools were used
Mesolithic Period Middle phase of the Stone Age- approx. 10,000 BC to 6,000 BC
Neolithic Period Later phase of the Stone Age- approx. 8,000 BC to 3,000 BC where only homo sapiens lived
hominids of erect primate mammals that include recent humans together with extinct ancestral and related forms
homo habilis lived from approx. 2.5 million to 1.5 million. Early form of hominids, first to use stone tools
