indigenous people people who are native to a particular area.
Catawba "River people" who lived in the Piedmont region of South Carolina

region an area or division, especially part of a country or the world having definable characteristics but not always fixed boundaries.
economy the wealth and resources of a country or region, especially in terms of the production and consumption of goods and services.
Rule of Law a principle under which all persons, institutions, and entities are accountable to laws that are: Publicly promoted. Equally enforced. Independently adjudicated.
representative government a type of government comprised of politicians who represent certain individuals or groups.
self-government a system in which the citizens of a country (or smaller political unit, such as a state) rule themselves and control their own affairs.
Virginia House of Burgesses First elected legislative assembly in the New World that was established in Virginia
Mayflower Compact Established a democratic society where people formed the government of the New England colonies
cash crops a crop grown to sell, not for the grower to use.
religious freedom/tolerance an attitude of acceptance and open-mindedness, especially toward opinions or behavior that one does not agree with.
plantations large pieces of land used to grow cash crops with slave labor.
diaspora the dispersal of any people from their original homeland.

Sir Walter Raleigh One of the first English explorers to attempt to make an English Settlement in the new world. tried 2x and named Virginia after Queen Elizabeth I
Christopher Columbus Italian, but he sailed for Spain; Got financial backup from the King & Queen of Spain; he was the first to discover the "New World"' and believed that he could sail around the world and reach India. Opened way to Spanish conquest and colonization.
Lord Ashley Cooper First Earl of Shaftesbury, was the leader of a group of men who worked to restore Charles II to the throne. He was rewarded with becoming one of the 8 Lords Proprietors of Carolina and is credited with the success of the South Carolina colony.
