Narrative Writing

TermDefinition
effect This is the way one thing influences or acts upon another.
effective This adjective describes something that is successful in producing a desired or intended result.
coherence the clear and orderly presentation of ideas in a paragraph or essay
internal coherence the use of transitions within a paragraph to connect ideas and thoughts
external coherence the use of transitions to begin a paragraph
genre a category or type of literature, such as short story, folk tale, poem, novel, play
denotation the exact, literal meaning of a word
connotation the suggested or implied meaning or emotion associated with a word beyond its literal definition.
figurative language the language used in an imaginative way to express ideas that are not literally true. It is used for effect, such as with personification, simile, metaphor, and hyperbole.
narrative tells a story or describes a sequence of events in an incident.
sensory details Authors sometimes use these descriptive words or phrases that appeal to the five senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell—to help their readers create a vivid mental image of the scenes or events in a story.
folklore the stories, traditions, sayings, and customs of a culture or a society
myth a traditional story that explains the actions of gods or heroes or the origins of the elements of nature
symbols an object, a person, or a place that stands for something else
symbolism the use of symbols
genre A literary genre is the category or class to which a literary work belongs; poetry, mythology, mysteries, and science fiction are all examples of literary genres. Texts from a particular genre often share common characteristics.
