Chapter 1: What is Behavioral Neuroscience
Term | Definition |
---|---|
behavioral neuroscience | the branch of psychology that studies the relationship between behavior and the body, particularly the brain |
mind-brain problem | deals with what the mind is and what its relationship is to the brain |
monism | the idea that the mind and the body consist of the same substance; the “mind” is either the product of the physical brain and thus, part of the physical brain |
dualism | the idea that the mind and the brain are separate; the mind is a metaphysical entity, distinct from our physical form |
empiricism | gather information through observation rather than logic, intuition, or other means |
localization | idea that specific areas of the brain carry out specific functions |
phrenology | 35 different “faculties” of emotion and intellect |
equipotentiality | the idea that the brain functions as an undifferentiated whole |
two goals of research in natural science | generalization and reduction |
generalization | identifying similar behaviors (sometimes across species) and understanding them with respect to their “pro-social” utility |
reduction | “reducing” behaviors to the neurobiological mechanisms subserving the behavior |
