QuestionAnswer
How do muscles adapt to exercise? Hypertrophy. Increase in tendon strength. Increase in mitochondria. Increase in myoglobin. Increase in glycogen storage. Improved use of energy sources. Increase tolerance to lactate.
What is hypertrophy? increase in muscle size and strength
What causes increase in muscle size? the muscle fibres become larger due to increases in protein in the muscle cells
What are tendons? tough bands of fibrous connective tissue
What do mitochondria do? produce aerobic energy
What is myoglobin? a type of haemoglobin
Where is myoglobin found? exclusively in muscles
What does myoglobin do? transports oxygen to the mitochondria to release energy
What can your muscles do as your body adapts to long-term exercise? store more glycogen
What does more glycogen in the muscles mean? you can train at higher intensities for longer as muscle glycogen does not require oxygen to produce energy
What can athletes do more efficiently? break down fats into fatty acids and into energy using oxygen
What can be used as an energy source when carbohydrates become scarce? fats
What does anaerobic training stimulate the muscles to do? become better able to tolerate lactic acid & clear it away more efficiently
