TermDefinition
Determinate of Health Any non-medical factor that has the potential to influence the health of an individual, such as the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age.
Health A state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing.
Habilitation A treatment option that is designed to help patients or clients learn skills that they are unable to learn on their own.
Rehabilitation A treatment option that is designed to help patients or clients regain skills or functions that have been lost to injury and/or illness.
Interdisciplinary Team A group of health care providers from different specialities and professional backgrounds that work together to achieve a common goal.
Multidisciplinary Team A group of health care providers from different specialities and professional backgrounds that contribute to the health of an individual independently.
Disability Any restriction or lack of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered typical for a human being, that is not corrected by a technical aid and lasting or expected to last six months or longer.
International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health An internationally used classification system used to define and describe the changes in body function, structure, capcity, and performance.
Body Function Physiological and psychological functions of body systems.
Body Structures anatomical parts of the human body such as organs, limbs and their components.
Impairment any problem in body function or structure such as a significant deviation or loss that impacts an individual's ability to perform an activity.
Activity the execution of a task or action by an individual.
Participation Refers to the involvement in a life situation.
Activity Limitation Refers to difficulties an individual may encounter when attempting to execute an activity.
Participation Restriction Refers to problems an individual may experience during the involvement in life situations.
Environmental Factor any physical, social, or attitudinal element of an environment in which people live and conduct their lives.
Abelism A set of beliefs or practices that devalue and discriminate against people with physical, intellectual, or psychiatric disabilities.
Short Term Goal The interim steps towards achieving or progressing toward a long term goal and is expected to be reached in 2 weeks or less.
Long Term Goal any goal that is expected to be achieved at a more distant future, usually in 2 or more weeks.
SMART Goal Acronym for Specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and relevance, and time.
Impact Reduction The act of decreasing the effect of an impairment on an individual.
Enable To supply with the means, knowledge, or opportunity to make day to day engagement in life possible.
Fragility Refers to a physiological state commonly associated with ageing that is characterized by reduced resistance to stressors as a result of the cumulative decline of multiple physiological systems that increase vulnerability to adverse health outcomes.
Functional Rehabilitation The process of returning an individual to their maximum levels of independence in the activities that are important to them.
Function the ability to perform tasks and obligations of daily living independently.
Affect The motivational, behavioral, and subjective aspects of emotion.
Competence refers to the set of attributes and skills required to perform a particular activity.
Performance refers to the physical act of carrying out a task and how well it can be completed under varying demands and environmental conditions.
Activity of Daily Living (ADL) Refers to the basic daily tasks essential for independent living such as bathing, dressing, and toileting.
Instrumental Activities of Daily living (IADL) Refers to the complex tasks required for independent living such a finance management, shopping, and managing medications.
SOAP Note Patient charting format that stands for Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan
F/DAR Note Patient charting format that stands for focus, data, action, response.
FAIR Note Patient charting format that stands for focus, assessment, intervention, and response.
Clinical Observation Refers to the observation of a patient while completing functional tasks in which information pertaining to performance and competence can be obtained.
Therapeutic Relationship A relationship that is perceived to encompass caring, supportive, and nonjudgmental behavior, embedded in a safe environment during a stressful period.
Body Image A persons subjective picture or mental image of their own body.
Helping Relationship A type of relationship in which at least one person has the intent of promoting growth, development, or improved functioning and coping skills of another individual.
Social Helping Realthionship A personal or intimate relationship in which general help is provided without specific or special skills, that is not defined by care needs and there is no power differential.
Therapeutic Helping Relationship A relationship that is health focused and client centered with defined boundaries and specialized professional skills.
Regulatory Body an organization that governs and regulates the educational, technical, certification, standard of care, ethical, and scope of practice of a specific profession.
Therapeutic Alliance The description of the interaction between a healthcare professional and their patients
Body Nostalgia Refers to the sentimental yearning for the previous appearance and function on one own's body.
Body disconnection Refers to not wanting to touch or acknowledge an injury or the part of the body affected by an injury.
Advanced Health Care Directive A legal document that defines an individual's health care wishes that only goes into effect when they are incapacitated and unable to speak for themselves.
Certification Refers to the act of deeming an individual as incapacitated and unable to appreciate risk and make health care decisions under the mental health act.
Personal Health Information any information, oral or written, that can identify an individual
