Precursor A precursor is something that happens before something else.
Saffir-Simpson Scale A system for classifying the intensity of a hurricane based on its wind speed.
Magnitude A measurement of the energy or strength of a natural hazard event. The stronger the hazard, the greater its magnitude.
Mitigate To make something less harsh or severe.
Tectonic Plate Boundary two or more tectonic plates meet and move relative to each other.
Convergent Boundary When two tectonic plates combine.
Divergent Boundary When two tectonic plates move away from each other.
Transform Boundary When two tectonic plates slide past each other.
Volcanic Eruption A volcanic eruption occurs when hot materials from the Earth's interior are thrown out of a volcano.
Hurricane A storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean.
Tornado - A mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud.
Forecast A scientific claim (statement backed by evidence and scientific reasoning) about a chance that an event will occur in the future.
Natural Hazard Forecast A scientific claim about the likelihood of a natural hazard event occurring in a particular place.
Risk The chance (probability) that a danger or hazard will occur.
Flood An overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land.
